Whenever you travel to or from Niagara Falls, are you aware that the Skyway that connects Burlington to Hamilton is not a single bridge, it is a pair of high-level bridges? Next to the Skyway, there is a steel bridge with two high towers. That is the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge. It was opened in 1962. The bridge can be lifted from 16 ft (5m) to its maximum height of 120 ft (36.5m). The life bridge has one lane in each direction for vehicles and one as well as a single pedestrian walkway.
It is very interesting to see the operation of the bridge. Also, walking on the bridge, you will find the road on the bridge is not paved.
Safety Notes:
Children should be accompanied by their parents.
Be safe walking on the bridge. Please leave some room for bicycle riders.
The bridge is under construction in 2024. Only one lane is open for vehicles.
Public Transit:
Burlington Transit (BT) riders can transfer to Hamilton Bus at the John Street Bus Terminal. The Hamilton bus has stops at both sides of the lift bridge.
Public Parking:
City parking lots are available on both sides of the bridge. Payment can be made through a mobile self-service website. A barcode is posted at the parking lot.
Walk:
Around 30-minute walk from the Burlington Hospital main entrance.
